A little on how I got started in making jewelry

I feel like it’s a good thing to take a peak behind the curtains so to say with how I got started making jewelry. This will go back so many years to my junior high days. From the point I learned to make friendship bracelets, you know those made with embroidery floss we take from our mom’s stash? Those bracelets that either went down in a diagonal line or if you figured it out on your own (no internet to look up videos back in those days) you could make a V shaped bracelet. Let me tell y9ou I made a ton of them and passed them out to friends and family. Then when my grandma on dad’s side would have garage sales she’d let me sell them there too. I made so little but I was so excited to get those few dollars from my bracelets.

I was probably in high school and started making wooden bead necklaces and earrings sets as well as the ever popular rhinestone and pearl jewelry from the late 80’s to early 90’s. This went on into my first adventure in college. I was talking with the same grandma about jewelry and she showed me a set my dad had made for here when he was in high school. I felt it was something that should be continued so I made her a red and white wooden bead necklace and earring set. When she had passed my Aunt said that grandma had labeled her jewelry as to who would get what, and I got that set back. She was so proud to wear that set and it made me happy as all get out as I think anyone would be if they were in my shoes.

I still have some of that jewelry floating around somewhere and possibly even the beads 20+ years later. All through my early 20’s I’d make bead necklaces for myself and friends and including gemstones, and I recently found the box with those stones beads and chips stored in it. I remember getting this empty brown small fishing box that was designed for small fishing weights, hooks and various other fishing supplies at a flea market in Florida. I saw other purposes for it and it’s held up wonderfully over the years. I still have all the seed beads from back then as well somewhere in the garage.

I like to say that being creative is in my blood. Both my mom and grandma’s were very creative women who have influenced me in my life. Heck even my grandpa’s were creative in different ways with wood and metal. In the summers at my dad’s mom she’s have us set up with craft projects that we were to make for our parents as Christmas gifts and we had to decide which goes to which parent. I think from that grandma I got the everything can be reused or save it cause it could be used in future projects. This has held true in my creative endeavors all my life, even through to this day. I’m going to use my ancient Cricut personal cutter from 20ish years ago to cut price tags using my old scrapbook paper and previously mentioned embroidery floss to add price tags to my wire wrap pieces for pop-up sales and craft fairs when I’m ready to start that part of my adventures. I’m using those beads for the earrings I’m making currently as well as my attempts at rings. I’ll show those items in a later post.
