Adventures in Rock Hunting Update

It’s been a while since I’ve written so forgive me please.  Lets see, since the last time I was here we’ve bought and sold and bought another vehicle for my rock hunting adventure, have a grandson now and our youngest has moved back home.  So yeah life has been busy for sure.

Finally, we did went rock hounding to Crystal Peak Mine just northwest of Reno, NV. I’ll show more of my finds in a later blog about the finds from that trip. This trip ended up being the only adventure for my first rock hunting vehicle .

My old way lifted 1995 Yukon

It handled everything great however just wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. So after this adventure the fires in the area began and that put a hold on my outdoor excursions due to the poor air quality and my lovely allergies.

Hubby and I went on a 2 week road trip from Reno to Kansas City, MO to see our grandson for the first time, see family and just relax. We thought about the different places we could see on our way back from Kansas City on the way home. We settled on a route we’ve never driven and to see some stops along the way.

Using Google Maps for the map

Having never been to the southwestern states, I found it pretty cool to see the geology of the area that I learned about in school. I was interesting to see how truly spread out everything is. Plus seeing some of the tourist trap like places where they have statues of wild life on the rock above some carved out areas in the rocks in Arizona.

We pushed through to Flagstaff, AZ and boy was that a tourist town that I really didn’t expect. But we did enjoy our night there. Then onward to Grand Canyon! I’m so happy we did stop here. Instead of trying to explore it ourselves, we did get a short tour on a jeep. I think this was good for us for the 1st visit and I’m sure not our last because we had the opportunity to just sit back and enjoy the ride and look around. We saw wild horses in the park and found out the are actually from someone’s herd that got lose and once a year, maybe more, they do a round up gathering the horses and send them back to their proper homes.

After a few hours here we decided to head to the next stop, Treasure Island at Las Vegas, NV. We got a nice room and spent a few nights here to relax before heading home. I had only been to Las Vegas as a young kid way before the city became family friendly. So I had very little memories of the city. This time, we had an amazing breakfast and dinner. We didn’t go to any shows but we did walk to the Volcano show at The Mirage and all the way down to the Fountains at the Bellagio. They both were so worth seeing. The weather was so hot and stale with everyone there in the beginning of August this is NOT when I’d recommend people to visit.

Finally after a few days there, we headed back to Reno, NV. It was nice to get home for sure. Will we take that trip again, resounding yes. Though next time I go to Las Vegas, I do want to drive my car so we can do some rock hunting.
